How do I install software on a smartphone?
I have a new HTC Touch Diamond, my first smartphone so I’m pretty much ignorant towards adding software, games, etc. onto it. How do I go about putting software made for the phone onto the phone from a desktop? I’m confused on how to throw it on there and execute it.

You need to install;

the correct version of the sync program. Using the file explorer in the sync window, drag/drop the .cab file onto the Diamond. Next, using the File Explorer in the Programs Menu, find the .cab file and tap it. It will open and install the program. Just follow the prompts. The new program should appear on the Programs or maybe Games Menu. You may delete the .cab when finished.
Hope that helps.

Some people ignorantly believe that you cannot ever get a smartphone without buying a data plan or that you cant use a smart phone without a data plan anyway…..This isnt entirely correct. Some smartphones have Wifi which allows you to use data without a “data plan”, so I never buy a smartphone without wifi……Some older phones that are not up to cutting edge specifications do not even require a data package at all…..The HTC Mogul with Sprint, the HTC Diamond and the HTC Touch Pro 1. The Touch Pro 2 requires Data. You can buy these phones used and use them without a data plan taking advantage of wifi OR you can get a cheap data plan, intended for “feature phones” and use hacked software to tether them and really take advantage of the unlimited data….always get unlimited data if you plan on tethering. With torrent use you can end up using TBs, not GBs, of data in a months time. Going over a 5gb or 200mb limit can cost you more than you will make in a lifetime if you are downloading pirated 360 games and HD/3d movies, so you need to cover your bases……they would screw you if they could, so you should do likewise.
So now that we have weeded out the ‘you cant get a smartphone without a data plan’, can we get a full list of smart phones that as of feb-2011 do not require a data package and also have Wifi?
Points and best answer go to whoever comes up with the best or most complete list.

I have got an older Samsung i760 which has WiFi. I have Verizon but I do not pay for a data plan and I make sure that the connection settings prevent the phone from dialing in to “a la carte” (read: pay through the nose by megabyte) data services. Then I just use the internal WiFi when I am within range of a hotspot. I believe the last time I checked an unlimited data plan would cost me about $ 60 per month…no way I need that.
