Is Nashville, TN really "hillbilly"?

Ok well I might be moving to Nashville, but I do not like the southern lifestyle… I mean I hear that southern people are really nice and open doors for you, but I cannot stand country music and don’t really like the country style (boots, cowboy hat, big belt buckle).
But I will admit, the scenery is nice in the south, and it is pretty warm.

I’ve been told that Nashville isn’t what people make it out to be, that you will come across a lot of people that don’t even have the southern accent, and that a lot of people dress casual, not the country style. Is this true?

Nothing against country people, but I just don’t like the music and clothing style. I’m a metal head and wear band tee’s with pyramid belts… I have piercings in my ears and eyebrow, will I fit in?
I did not make it up… I hear it all the time that Nashville is full of hillbillies. BUT the people that say that have never been there so they would not know… I have myself did NOT say its full of hillbillies, thats why I am asking if it is or not.

And didn’t I just state that I heard that people down there are nice people and even take the time to open doors for you? Maybe I am taking this the wrong way but Jen, you are kind of making me think twice on the people down there because it just seems to me that you are thinking I am making all this up to make Nashville look bad…
But like I said, maybe I am just taking it the wrong way.

No! I love it there. It’s a beautiful city with a passion for music and fun. And please get past the superficial stereotypes of the south, that just sounds shallow. I’m from hawaii, but I think I have a right to say that the south is beautiful and nashville is an amazing city

Ha ha, the only hillbilly’s in nashville are the tourists…and they are really the only ones that wear the boots, hat, belt buckle getup.
The “southern lifestyle” has nothing to do with clothes or music. When someone talks about the “southern lifestyle” its more about an attitude, family, community, and well…food:)
99.9% of the people here dress like normal people…we have the same store that anyone else does anywhere else in the country.
There are plenty of the rock/metal people here. Matter of fact i would say that the “lifestyle” that you say is you is more the norm here then the so called “southern lifestyle” that you have made up in your head.

But yes…the “southern lifestyle” does include people being nice…and that is the norm:) So if you can’t deal with that then you might not like it here:)

EDIT: ok maybe not made up…more of a preconceived idea on how nashville is that can be easily proven false by talking to people who actually live in the area.
