Yvonne’s desk

 About Yvonne’s desk…
The state of my desk goes in cycles – piles of paper accumulate for days and then I’ll have a tidying up fit and place things in order. This is relatively tidy.
My desk diary is one of the few things that’s central to my work and is not digital – the additional is my reporter’s notebook.
The pyramid-shaped object on the left of the window ledge is my lucky Buddha penholder – at the beginning of every month I turn it upside down and shake it, and a shower of coins falls into the basket that the Buddha-map is holding over his head. As I’m a freelance, I’ll try anything to encourage the money to flow in.
The miniature hurricane lamp on the right of the desk is a novelty pencil sharpener my mum bought me – because I was trained in Pitman’s shorthand which requires you to write thick and thin strokes, I find it simpler to read my notes if they’re made in pencil.
My most vital work tool is my computer, but you can’t see it because I have it positioned on a table at right angles to my desk, so the daylight hits it from the side. That way I get plenty of light but it doesn’t fall on the screen and make it hard to read.
