What is the difference between a smart phone and an Android phone?

What is the difference between a smart phone and an Android phone?

I’m planning on getting a new phone. I’m trying to decide between a Blackberry Curve 8530 and the Samsung Galaxy Indulge. I currently have a Blackberry Curve 8330. I’ve never had an Android, so I’m wondering if they are smart phones or are they just feature phones trying to act like smart phones? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

They are both smart-phones, android uses android network and market and blackberry uses blackerry…. If your into all the fancy apps and stuff I would go with an android.

The 3 main operating systems are android, ios and blackberry os. they are all considered smart phones in their own right. from smarter phones to dumber it would be android, blackberry then ios. In my opinion. Android are generally made for touch screen phones. Blackberries have the traditional qwerty keyboards. Recently Blackberry released os6 that makes for a better touch interface on the torch. Androids are becoming easier to develop apps for and the market is slowly bridging the gap between the itunes app store. Droids are just more fun and interactive to use than blackberries. and there is a rumor that android will be receiving bbm with limited functionality, but bbm nonetheless

(Theres also Symbian, but i dont see a future in that lol)

also RIM owns bbm. the older you get the less you will want bbm, ive grown tired of msging ppl back asap and when they see the “r” beside their msg they become depressed and insecure when i dont reply right away. bbm is basically the new msn messenger for phones. if bbm is released for android, i will only want to have it for my blackberry contacts who opt out of unlimited texting.

All Android phones are smart phones. So are all newer Blackberries, all Palms, all iPhones. Basically, what makes a phone a smart phone is if it has all of the following features (some feature phones have some of these features, but only smart phones have all of them):

- Large touch screen
- Full keyboard (real or just on-screen)
- Lots of available apps that are made by many different companies
- Full-featured web browser
- WiFi + 3G or 4G high speed access
- GPS, compass, orientation sensors

Any handset running android is widely considered to be a smartphone. In fact, the Samsung Galaxy models all run Android. And I’ll admit I’m being biased, but I’d recommend a galaxy over an 8530. Blackberry’s just don’t offer the same experience you get on iPhones or android phones which is considered to be amazing by comparison.

I can see the fact that some android phones can be less expensive and they have widgets, but the iphone has better graphics, battery, and the apps run more smoothly. So why is android gaining popularity?

Answer by HaredX
Because most people can’t afford an iPhone

Answer by URMOM
EVERYBODY has a Iphone. Seriously getting overrated if you ask me. Android is more versatile…..

Answer by golfmanreddy
Not many people care about or know what widgets are and just want a cheap smartphone with internet on their carrier. With Verizon’s new iPhone release, the droid sales will fall. The iPhone has always been and always will be more popular than the Android.

Because apple still thinks they own the iPhone after you pay for it and see fit to control how you use it. I like apple, don’t get me wrong (I’m typing this on my iPad) but as a phone producer, they are awful. They literally tell you what you can and cannot do with the device. Google through android does not.

The android operating system is available on a multitude of phones which are carried by a multitude of carriers. Apple doesn’t license its operating system. It’s only available on Apple devices. The iPhone is only carried by certain carriers and it’s expensive, both in terms of the phones and in terms of the plans. It simply isn’t available to a lot of people. The other reason is that android is open source which gives users a lot of control over what they can do with the phone. Apple tightly controls its devices. To some users, this is a critical difference.

Google Android, Apple iOS devices corralled by new device manager
Android and iOS mobile devices now can be corralled by a Smith Micro device management application unveiled this week at the Interop show in Las Vegas. Client-side code makes even personally-owned devices visible to enterprise IT managers. Previously, the Smith Micro Mobile Device Management (MDM) client ran only on products using the Symbian OS or Microsoft Windows Mobile. Now iOS and Android …

Story: tinyurl.com Realistic Android With A Heart And Dinosaur DNA (Video) The amazingly realistic female android, named Actroid DER 2, was demonstrated at the AKIBA Robot Festival here in the Akihabara district of Tokyo. Philip K. Dick asked, “Do androids dream of electric sheep?” Now, decades later, we still don’t have a definitive answer to his query, though we may find out sooner than anyone thinks. Although they haven’t been combined into a complete, fully functional android yet, all of the required pieces seem to be coming together in an amazingly realistic fashion. A good example is the “Actroid DER 2″ android exhibited at the AKIBA Robot Festival last weekend here in the Akihabara district of Tokyo. This female android is surprisingly realistic, right down to the polish on her dainty fingernails, her facial movements, and even skin tone. We’ve seen a lot of impressive photos and videos of Actroid DER in the past, but honestly – none of them really do justice to the android’s realism. Seeing it in person, up close, is a totally different, and almost startling experience that can’t be effective captured on film or video. Her movements are surprisingly realistic. Obviously a great deal of time and effort has been devoted to studying the body language of real women so that it could be emulated by the android. Of course all of her actions and words are carefully scripted. Her creators have even gone to the trouble of including a little humor. At one point during the
