Q&A: How do i set up the Android SDK?

Hi, I want to start developing apps on the Google Android platform but I do not know how to set the SDK up. Can anyone give me a step-by-step guide?

Answer by Monkey
After downloading the SDK, unpack the .zip archive to a suitable place on your machine. By default, the SDK files are unpacked into a directory named android_sdk_ __. The directory contains a link to a community copy of the documentation and the subdirectories tools/, samples/, and others.

Make a note of the name and place of the unpacked SDK directory on your system — you will need to refer to the SDK directory later, when background up the Android plugin or using SDK tools.

Optionally, you can add the path to the SDK tools directory to your path. As mentioned above, the tools/ directory is located in the SDK directory.

In the home directory locate the .bash_profile and locating the PATH variable add the place to your $ SDK_ROOT/tools folder.

Adding tools to your path lets you run Android Debug Join (adb) and the additional mandate line tools without needing to supply the full path to the tools directory. Note that, if you update your SDK, you should remember to update your PATH settings to point to the new place, if different.

Apple did not allow Google to release Google Voice or Liberty apps, so I will say no, Apple will not allow Google Maps Navigation onto the iPhone because it will compete with the built in GPS app.

But, Google did find workarounds by making the Google Voice webapp and Liberty webapp work on the iPhone…so maybe they’ll find some way.

But that’s doubtful as Google Navigation isn’t as simple as a webapp.

So unfortunately no, if you want Google Maps Navigation you need to get out of Apple’s closed tightly controlled world and come to the freedom of Android.

You don’t.

But, supposedly Mapquest is working on an app for the iPhone that offers voice nav like the Google Maps for Android.
