Windows Mobile Version questions?

Windows Mobile Version questions?

I know that there is a windows mobile 5, 6, and 6.1 currently, but i was wondering can an older version phone be updated?
For, example if i get a windows mobile 6.1 powered phone and version 7 comes out later; will i be able to update to version 7?
Also when an application is made for windows mobile 6 does that also include 6.1?
Lastly, what is the difference between the professional and standard versions?
Thanks for the help and sorry about all persons questions.

My understanding is that the ability to upgrade to newer versions of Windows Mobile lies with your service provider. I guess there is so much customization for each provider that they need to provide the upgrade. If you are a hacker, I would imagine you may maybe do it on your own at the risk of bricking your phone, of course.

I’m running 6.1 and haven’t seen any applications that work on 6, but not 6.1.

I reckon the different versions just refer to which device they run on – Smartphone/PDA is professional, PocketPC without the phone is standard, etc. I remember that from when the phones came out – I can’t find any current reference.

What do you reckon? Answer below!

I used to have a symbian OS phone where i installed skyepro, but now i’ve changed to a pocket pc phone operated under windows mobile 6.0. I was wondering if anyone knows if there’s an application similar to skyepro or fscaller for a windows based phone.
