Anyone here ever programmed for Symbian S60?
I just got my hands on a Nokia N95 8GB and want to learn to program on it. I know VB.Net fairly well and have experience with Windows Mobile programming. The Nokia uses Symbian S60 v9.2 Feature Pack 1. I would like to know a few things:
First, I would like to know whether you can somehow use VB.Net on Symbian. I am pretty sure that you can’t, as to use VB.Net you need the .Net framework, which I doubt is compatible with S60. I have seen a version of the .Net mobile framework, but it is too expensive for my needs (simple programming meant to only be used by me).
Secondly, I would like to what programming language is best for S60 programming, as well as any free software that I can use to program for it. I am pretty sure that you can use Java with it, but I’ve never programmed in Java and don’t really want to learn if there is an easier way. If not, I’ll give it a go.
Thanks for any help.

If you want to learn about Symbian programming the best resources are http://www.forum.nokia.com and http://developer.symbian.org
There are many programming languages to chose from, from the native Symbian C++ (most powerful and with best coverage) to Java, Python, standard C/C++ and, with an experimental status now, Qt for S60. All these are free (IDE, SDKs, docs and trainings, all that free).

some friends and I want to make a small 2D game with C++ , also we want to make it with all open source software such as GIMP/Blender. We want to make it run on multiple OS’s like Linux, Win7, windows Mobile…
We figure we will have to start by programing a grid with tiles for the graphics and collisions. It will be kind of an action RPG type game with spells and such. How does the world move? Does the Character move independently while the world scrolls underneath?
None of us are very well versed in any one programing language, but we did find some instructional videos on YouTube.
Where can I find good info for programing such a thing?
How long do you think it will take to get something playable?
Do I need have a lot of skill with calculus or advanced math to program?
Are there any other free software tools that might help?(i know about codebox)
Thank you for your help!

You mentioned that none of you are particularly well versed in a particular language, so I would suggest that you should try making your game in Python using the pygame module.
There’s a pretty good tutorial for making a game in pygame here: http://www.nerdparadise.com/tech/coding/python/videogame/
That’s one of the one’s I used, and I found it quite helpful.
How long do you think it will take to get something playable? – Couple of hours / few days
Do I need have a lot of skill with calculus or advanced math to program? – No.
What do you think? Answer below!
