Do phones ever overcharge?

Im thinking of getting the htc hero or the nexus one(might be coming out) with sprint this April and I was wondering if smart phones ever overcharge. My friend had the G1 for about a year and now he charges his phone at night but then his phone will only last about 2-3 hours. I currently have the first rumor phone that ever came out and I can keep it on the charger for a week and it will still work fine. Do some phones overcharge and some dont?

In most cases of short battery life, they are caused by too much usage or being too old. I don’t think they overcharge.

I just got a new cell phone (HTC Hero), and was told to charge the battery for at least 4 hours, to ensure optimal battery life. It’s been charging for a couple hours so far, but during that time, I was playing around with the phone- I texted a friend, browed the net…and just got a feel for the phone. The phone has been charging the entire time, and is still connected to the charger.

Will all of that drain the battery life in spite of it still charging?
* browsed the net, haha

Wont drain the battery but will not charge it . you need to leave it until it tells you it is fully charged. If you keep on partially charging it , it will kill the battery.

nah don’t worry about it. the battery life will increase a bit, after it has been used for a couple of times. then as it ages its capacity will decrease, that’s only natural.
a lithium battery’s life is mainly dependent on usage. the best thing is to connect it to the charger whenever possible. however, that is rather impractical. another good thing is to avoid draining it too often, as this is not good for this type of battery.

It wont kill the battery if you were playing with it when it was charging. You should let it charge all the way. Once the phone is all the way charged and it is still on the charger, then it will start to kill the battery. What you did is fine. Have fun with your new phone! I’ve heard it’s really good!
-Hope this helps you!
