It was really hot underneath that pyramid.

I looked in the newspaper and i attended a few interviews and most of them seemed like shady money making schemes. So I posted my resume on monster and hot jobs. Now I am paranoid each time a company contacts me that they will be shady too. Any tips to weed out the terrible companies from the excellent?
And for some reason the job title “recruiter” makes me thing pyramid scheme.. am i being paranoid?

Answer by milton b
You are not paranoid if they are really out to get you. Your caution is justified, there really are a lot of scams out there. Checking out a company is usually just a matter of looking for their web site.

i hope you will get the job soon!

Unfortunately, some people in network marketing are being trained to scour the job sites looking for people to contact about getting signed up for their biz opp. I know this for fact since I was in an opp that spent an hour a week schooling their recruits how to do this. It’s terrible business, but that’s what some teach.

I’m explaining this simply because even on Monster, Hot Jobs, Career Builder, you are going to get ‘hit’ by some of these people.

Best tip I can offer is that when most legit companies contact you via email or telephone, they are going to say “I am with XYZ company, we have reviewed your resume”, etc. Most of these unprofessional network marketers are NOT going to mention their company name in anticipation of they have you on the phone and then they are still doubtless not going to tell you in anticipation of they get you to agree to a ‘presentation’. If you get a call that you are unsure of, just question, ‘what company are you with and what would I be doing?’ Question right up front and you will save yourself a bunch of time. If they hem and haw around, hang up.

By the way, there are some companies out there by this technique that ARE not shady or pyramid schemes. Network marketing is a very viable way to make income, but there again, they should not be contacting people who are looking for a JOB.

No need to be paranoid, just question questions.

~hope some of this makes sense.
~best to you

It depends on the types of jobs you are applying for. If you are applying for jobs that promise to make you rich in exchange for stuffing or addressing envelopes, promotion stuff on the internet, or the like, it’s doubtless a scam.

What types of jobs are you looking for? What schooling and skills do you have? Have you applied for jobs at companies that are located in your area — seats like the phone company, the utility companies, local banks, law offices, accountants, architects, engineers and doctors, the local hospital — or local government offices? Have you registered with a local fleeting agency — that’s a excellent way to try out different companies in anticipation of you find the one you like. I worked as a fleeting in Houston and in Southern California — I liked it and earned a really excellent living.

The community everywhere I live is home to a lot of senior citizens and there are groups and companies here that hire people to work as “in-home assistants” for the elderly — these assistants help with things like housekeeping, cooking, shopping, moving to and from doctor appointments, etc.. The starting wage is $ 15.00/hour and goes up to about $ 25.00/hour depending on the type of responsibilities the assistant has. Assistants who have special skills such as dietary plotting, accounting or healthcare make more.

There is an ancient saying: If it sounds too excellent to be right, it doubtless is.

I hope this helps. Finding the right job and getting established in a career can be trying.
