Does android phone offer updates similar to the iphone?

If I buy an android phone with ancient operating system, can I upgrade my phone to the most current operating system via updates for free from Google or android developers.

Updates are done automatically, Droid will update itself to the newest OS on its own even if it is running on an older OS, gets on my nerves sometimes because stuff randomly changes and I dont know why till i realize an update is out, you can also force the updates if they dont go on their own very simply. The link in my source clarifies that. Go droid, I did!

Depends… certain Android phones are getting the update where as others any aren’t or aren’t for a while. e.g. The Nexus One is the only one currently with 2.2 whereas some others are getting it this weekend. More like a phased in update for the innumerable phones that Android runs on, disparate the iPhone where it is generally the same phone so everyone can update at the same time once the software is unrestricted.
