i have a tmobile htc g1 and an att sim card i want to unlock it for free?

do I have to call at&t or t-mobile to get an unlock code or is there a free site or software where i can get it unlocked

You will most likely be able to request an unlock code from T-Mobile if you have been with them for more than 90 days. You should question them how much it costs first before going somewhere online.

If you are not pleased with their pricing or unlocking terms, and if you need it unlocked for free, I have had excellent experiences with a site called http://www.freeunlocks.com where basically you complete an advertising offer in exchange for the unlock code (see the source link for an article written by freeunlocks themselves regarding the process, which I found useful). If this is not for you, feel free to buy one on additional sites, but for public like me who cannot afford it, FreeUnlocks was a fantastic solution.

Call T-M0bile tell them you need to unlock you phone your going on vacation or something. Be sure to call from another phone. They will walk you through it for FREE. It takes about 5 minutes. But you do need to be customer.
